It's the "Ask Any Question You Have Day" at Fit True

Today, you ask a question and I'll answer it to the best of my ability. Use the comment section to post your question and the answer will follow. If you don't ask it today, don't worry. We'll be having days like this about once a week or so.

  1. First question that I got was from my friend "Billy." "Billy"'s question:"If I am trying to gain size is it better for me to do more reps or less reps during my workouts?"

  2. Thanks for your question "Billy."

In general, reps of eight to twelve will build the greatest size. Less than that and your building more strength but less size and greater than that your building muscle endurance.

Go to the "Your Head in The Game" section on the Fit True resource center just below these posts. The second book listed there should be of help to you.

  4. Next question come from "Sundance." It reads, "It's happened, I'm a 39 year old guy and I have a set of [man boobs] that any 14 year old girl would be proud to own. How do I get rid of them?"

  5. That's actually not very uncommon. As men age their testosterone levels drop which means that muscle mass becomes harder to maintain and fat deposits happen much easier.

Fat doesn't happen, for men or woman, of any age evenly throughout the body. Men tend to gain fat on their upper bodies and ladies a little bit lower.

Since Sundance's problem is a fat problem resistance training, cardio and nutrition are the answers. Here's a link to a book that works.

Changing your nutrition and adding some exercise should take care of the problem. This is a process and may take some time but commit some time and some effort and you will see results. The next question is related.

  6. Dave asks, "What's best? Aerobics before or after weight training?"

  7. Great question. Most folks do it backwards by doing their cardio first. They think dropping the body fat is more important to them than toning muscle so they run first. Unfortunately, the body doesn't work that way.

Strenuous resistance training burns as many calories or more than the way most people do their cardio work. Workout first then hit the cardio. You'll see better results. Here's a good resource:

  8. Do you recommend cardio, machine work or standard crunches for getting the best results on ab toning? What advice can you give for getting abs into shape again?

  9. Why did it seem that for years we got along on 3 meals a day and we didn't get fat?

  10. BitsOfWhitt, that should probably be the subject of a whole blog. The short answer is toning is a result of low body fat and toned conditioned muscles. So work the fat off by doing cardio. Any cardio. Just get the heart rate up. But do your muscle toning first, including your abs. Give those muscles a reason to be toned. Here's a resource:

  11. Good question Mom. . . I mean Anonymous. In the past we talked about three square meals. The truth is that "Three square meals," included a lot of snacking. Also in years past we, as a society, were much more active. Most of our ancestors worked hard physically from sun up to sun down. In general, they also ate food that was much less processed and more nutrient dense. This book talks about these concepts:
